SCAM ALERT: Planning Board Scam
The Town of Monmouth is issuing a warning to its residents and local businesses about a fraudulent email scam that has recently come to light.
The scam emails falsely claim to be from the Town of Monmouth Planning Department. However, these emails are sent from the address planning.monmouthmaine@usa.com, which is not a legitimate Town of Monmouth email address.
The fraudulent emails include a fake invoice attachment requesting a wire transfer payment. The scam artists have falsely used the Town's logo and provided incorrect name and contact information for the Planning Board Chair. It is crucial to note that Monmouth's Planning Board and the Code Enforcement Departments would never request payment via wire transfer. These fraudulent emails are designed to appear official, but they have no connection to the Town of Monmouth.
Do not to respond to the email or provide any payment. You may verify any communications coming from the Planning Board by calling the Town Office or by verifying that the sender has a @monmouthmaine.gov email address.
If you have sent money or believe you have been scammed, contact the Monmouth Police Department.
All official Town of Monmouth emails come from a @monmouthmaine.gov email address. If you receive a suspicious email about planning applications or have doubts about an email's authenticity, contact the Town Office at 207-481-9400.
